Welcome back to Lent Daily it's good to see you if you recall that we're going through Heaven hell and purgatory and examining the mystical experiences of the Saints now we have shifted to Purgatory after 10 episodes of hell today we're looking at St Francis of Rome now you might recall her visions of Hell which we'll Link at the end of this video but she also had visions of purgatory but just for a refresher who was St Francis of Rome St Francis was born in 1384 and died in 1440 was a holy Roman woman of noble lineage granted Vivid and Powerful Visions she shared these Revelations with her spiritual director who carefully documented them both as a testament to her sanctity and for the spiritual benefit of future Generations she was canonized by Pope Paul V 5 in 1608 now if you recall she was led through Hell by the Archangel Raphael and she continues this journey now into purgatory and when she gets to Purgatory she perceives three levels and then she sees the entrance which has this sign or this gate over top of it and the sign gleams and it's glowing in this beautiful Crystal and it's and the sign says behold the realm of true pration a Land of Hope not desolation Isn't it nice that things in purgatory rhyme she continues this journey now into purgatory with the Archangel Raphael as Francis entered Purgatory she send once more the visible presence of her Celestial Guardian the Archangel Raphael this Mighty angel said to her this realm is called Purgatory for the souls who are here are in the process of being purged of their sins and guilt for this reason it may also be justly called the place of hope the lowest of the three regions of purgatory is filled with flames like hell but the Flames here are of a different quality and nature to those in hell for the fires of The Inferno are black and lightless whereas the Flames of purgatory glow with a vivid red and give forth radiant light the light of these purifying and cleansing fires illuminates the Souls which are here with divine grace through this illumination they come to realize the saving and liberating truth and to understand that their term of pration is fixed and finite one thing I noticed in her writings is she describes the lower flames of purgatory like those of hell but with again with hope this this description is a pattern you'll see as we continue on through purgatory and different Saints and their Visions another thing she notes is that a soul is positioned in purgatory according to the guilt of their conscience and the gravity of their sins when they died so greater guilt and a greater seriousness of sin that hasn't been at atone for than a more serious uh pration and more serious suffering uh she also makes an interesting note here that for every mortal sin that a soul has committed which then has been confessed in in the sacrament of confession but then has not been atoned for through temporary sufferings in this life receives 7 years of purgatory seven years of suffering now the church doesn't officially teach this this is a private Revelation but it's it's an interesting thing to think about because when she referred back to her visions of hell she talked about instruments of torture and these instruments of torture symbolized different sufferings in hell she she said the the the actual physical instruments of torture didn't exist in hell but they represented something St John bosow says something else I mean he touched the wall of Hell in his dream but later says that what he saw God communicated to him through symbols so if we take this logic and apply it to what St Francis says regarding seven years should we interpret that as literally I don't think we necessarily have to do that I mean the church doesn't but what we can grasp or take from this is that it does represent something and what it tells me is that seven years is much worse than one year but what the church does teach is that every sin requires purification from the catechism of the Catholic church every sin even venial entails an unhealthy attachment to creatures which must be purified either here on Earth or after death in the state called Purgatory did you know that that every sin that you have ever committed in your life will require a purification in this life through sufferings through prayers through fasting through offering the holy sacrifice of the mass through Penance or in the life to come in the temporary state of purgatory but we should not think that a venal sin although minor infraction in our mind requires no purification that is not what the church teaches the church teaches every sin even venial sin or mortal sin after it's been confessed in the sacrament of confession requires that it be purified in order that we obtain our Eternal reward in heaven Francis next turned her gaze to the demons who are assigned to service in purgatory Every Soul has its own demon assigned to it who stands at its left side this demon constantly reminds the soul of its guilt and the gravity of the offenses it has committed against the almighty these reproaches together with the Hideous aspect of the vexatious companion demon who uttered them not to mention the cleansing fire which abounds in purgatory were a source of very grave suffering for the souls who were serving time there apart from the verbal attacks the demons St Francis says inflicted no other torments or punishments upon the souls in purgatory she also notes that the sufferings of the souls in purgatory should not be considered punishments from God but them experien ing his Divine Justice and that their intent is not to harm but to heal I thought that was beautiful that Purgatory can be considered a place of healing she also notes that the souls in purgatory continuously cry out to God but this crying out is of a very different nature to the Hopeless vociferations of the souls who are damned to hell in purgatory the crying out was rather an expression of sincere and heart rendering penitence and it was even gratitude at the mercy of God while these cries were far from exalted or joyful they nevertheless were infused with a kind of firm hope and spiritual Beauty and they were nothing like the black enduring cacophony of Despair which resounded ceaselessly in the fine haunted Netherworld of the infernal each of these Souls realized that all that is currently ly suffered was merely temporary and a necessary part of its preparation for heaven indeed these Souls though they endured pains and torments of varying degrees of intensity all knew with absolute certainty that in due course they would arrive at the inevitable Joys and radiant splendors of the kingdom of God now recall that on the left side of these Souls St Francis saw a demon that would be recalling this person's the soul sin and their guilt and how they rejected God's Gra gra but she also saw something else interesting on the right side of each Soul she described a beautiful angel that angel who would encourage this Soul this Angel she noted was that person's Guardian Angel appointed by God to watch over them their entire Earthly life and now in purgatory they encouraged the person reminding them of their prayers reminding them of their faithfulness reminding them of the grace of God this Guardian Angel who stood at the right of each Soul would also respond to the vexatious demon who stood at the left and when this demon would remind the soul of the sins and vices of which it had been guilty during its mortal life the angel would respond by reminding the soul of the Deeds of Charity and piety which it had performed it would also remind the soul of the good works it had intended to do but never actually put into practice but also of the times when it had sincerely and earnestly fought against some Temptation whether successful or unsuccessful this is a role of our guardian angels that I've never heard before um I find this encouraging that not only through our Earthly life do our Guardian Angels watch over us but there is also some sort of ministry potentially in purgatory St alonsus sori makes an interesting point about the guardian Angel's appointment over a soul at the general judgment he says that when our sins are revealed before the almighty God at the end of time our guardian angel stands there and testifies to the good and evil that we have done so another extra thought for you to tuck away please share with me below what's the doubt to and why and we'll end with a prayer
