change welcome back to lent daily today we are going to hear a story from St Bede doctor of the church retold by St Robert Bellarmine also doctor of the church St Bede was an 8th century English Monk and historian best known for preserving early church history in England and it was he who first recorded the powerful story which was later shared by another doctor of the church St Robert Bellarmine who lived between 1542 and 1621 St Bellarmine quotes St Bey saying England has been witness in our own days to a singular Prodigy which may be compared to the Miracles of the first ages of the church so what happens well the story is in North umberland there was a man named driel who was a Christian chrisan man he had a family and one day he got sick the sickness progressed and he died and all through the night beside his bed was his wife and children and they mourned the passing of their father and husband well in the morning it is said that he sat up in his bed and everyone ran away except for his wife isn't that a good wife always standing by the side of her husband everyone runs she's there and then he speaks saying this fear not he said it is God who restores to me my life he wishes to show in my person a man raised from the dead I have yet longed to live upon Earth but my new life will be very different from the one I led hereto for then he arose full of Health went straight to the chapel and there remained long in prayer after he prayed for a while Dell went home and said goodbye to his loved ones explaining that he was going to spend the rest of his life preparing for his death and then he took onethird of his wealth and he gave it to his children he gave oneir to his wife and then the last to the church after he had given everything away he went to a monastery and begged the Abbott to let him enter so that he could spend the rest of his life doing prayer and Penance the Abbot gave him a retired cell which he occupied for the rest of his life through three exercises divided his time prayer the hardest labor and extraordinary penances the most rigorous fasts he counted as nothing in Winter he was seen to plunge himself into frozen water and remain there for hours and hours in prayer whilst he recited the whole Salter of David drelm lived a life of deep prayer and Penance and he rarely spoke about his experience but finally after being pressed about what happened after he died he decided to share for the spiritual benefit of other people on leaving my body I was received by a benevolent person who took me under his guidance his face was brilliant and he appeared surrounded with light he arrived at a large deep valley of immense extent all fire on one side all ice and snow on the other on the one hand brazers and cauldrons of flame on the other the most intense cold and the blast of a glacial wind this mysterious Valley was filled with innumerable Souls which tossed as by a furious Tempest threw themselves from one side to the other when they could no longer endure the violence of the fire they sought relief amidst the ice and snow but finding only a new torture they cast themselves again into the midst of the Flames I contemplated in a stuper these continual visites of horrible torments and as far as my sight could extend I saw nothing but a multitude suit of Souls which suffered without ever having Repose their very aspect inspired me with fear on seeing this dral thought at first that he was seeing hell but then his guide turned to him and said it was not no that this Valley where you see so much fire and so much ice is the place where the souls of those are punished who during life have neglected to confess their sins and who have deferred their conversion to the end thanks to a special mercy of God they have had the happiness of sincerely repenting before death of confessing and detesting their sins his guides said that this is why they were not damned and on the great day of judgment these Souls will enter the kingdom of heaven then he said several of them will obtain their Deliverance before that time by the merits of prayers alms and fasts offered in their favor by the living and especially in virtue of the Holy sacrifice of the mass offered for their relief drel was asked why he took on such severe penances for example plunging himself into ice cold water he replied that that he had seen other torments and cold of another kind and penances still more astonishing and as he got older he never ceased to afflict his body and although broken down with age he would accept no alleviation what I find interesting about this is that St Bey testified that this man's life was a great example to other people and it caused a great many of conversions in England so we have a doctor of the church giving testimony to the positive fruit of this man's life so I'll leave you with this question again if you saw what he saw how would your life be changed let's end with a [Music] prayer Eternal Father I offer thee the most precious blood of thy Divine son Jesus in Union with the masses said throughout the world today for all the holy souls in purgatory for Sinners everywhere for sinners in The Universal Church those in my own home and within my family amen [Music]
